[3.3.x] Support Forum • Sigh - yet another "Can't log into the ACP"

Background: This issue occurred while running v3.2.7. As Admin, I visit the site several times a day, often accessing the ACP. My passwords are auto-populated via Google, and that has worked fine for years. Then out of the blue, phpBB stopped recognizing the password. I have not changed/installed/deleted anything on the server, hardly ever visiting that side of things. My forum uses dead-stock phpBB code, no mods, no extensions.

Things I've tried:
Webhost: they couldn't help, saying that if I can sign them into the ACP maybe they can help. Ugh, no, that IS the problem. I asked them if they had changed anything on their side within the last few days and they said no.
Creating a temporary Admin1 database entry: I found the frequent threads regarding not having the Admin password, and performed the recommended fix. Somewhat surprisingly, it didn't work either.
Upgrading to 3.3.11: Problem persists.

I can think of only three things that might have happened:
1. Someone hacked my account
2. The webhost changed something that they're unaware of, or don't want to say
3. Something went wonky with phpBB at their end (though that should be ruled out by updating - I assume)

The webhost has volunteered that they can restore the site to as it was a week again (losing whatever posts have been made). That's the nuclear option, though at this point I'm unsure if even that'll work, hence coming here first.

The mystery to me is why it failed only now. I can understand if I hadn't set something correctly, or don't have some file - but it's worked untouched for years, and now doesn't. I'm at a complete loss, and that's what it takes to get me to come ask for help here. Thanks.
