Over the last few years, our forum has been receiving ever-increasing bot traffic. AS I type, we have more than 6000 bots probing the site. Needless to say, this creates slowness for all users or a complete inability to see the forum for many, including myself. Some users get a holding page from another website, including the usual adverts and I have seen this myself on occasion.
I also find myself getting thrown out and have to log in every few days in recent weeks, although I have no idea if this is related to the high bot traffic we are experiencing.
Are there any ways to dramatically cut down this bot traffic, other than by blocking IP ranges or giving the bots restricted membership? Or is this just the new norm and we just have to accept it?
Admittedly, the forum version needs updating, and this will be done shortly, but can I expect an improvement simply by installing the latest version?
Thank you for any help.
