Two months ago same problem started at my website. There are only few (2-3) active users at the forum and there were 2-3 requests by bots per second.
I thought that the bots/guests are the issue so I paid for Cloudflare service. That has reduced the amount of traffic significantly. Now there are only few requests to the website per minute! (screenshot attached of log).
But guess what! Today my website crashed again!
It is all hosted at DigitalOcean and database server is stuck at 100%, same issue like two months ago.
Number of sessions is causing DB to go to 100% and it appears that counting number of sessions is killing the database, as it keeps executing same query again and again for each visit.
Once I cleared all sessions the issue was gone. But number of sessions keeps increasing with each opened page. As the time goes sessions table gets bigger and sql query to count number of sessions kills the database.
Why is phpbb performing counting of sessions in the DB table and how can we disable or control that?
