[3.3.x] Support Forum • Bouncing email - 550 Date header far in the past/future

Hoping for a pointer or two as to what might be an underlying cause of notification emails, that have been sent to users as a result of a post, bouncing.

The cause seems to be associated with one or more but not all posts. I receive tens of bounce messages daily, which all include the following. Green font is where I've replaced specific detail with generic:

<recipient email address>:
IP failed after I sent the message.
Remote host said: 550 Date header far in the past/future.

I've not included email headers here, however can do if anybody thinks those would help pinpoint a cause.

I'm running phpBB 3.3.10 on a virtual / shared Linux server, PHP Version 7.3.23.

I've raised the matter with the server administrator. The issue has been escalated and there's been much dialogue, however the most recent suggestion by the server administrator included:
This issue occur if incase your email script’s coding is not RFC compliant.
"The email’s date header is too far in the past or future" To resolve this, your script will need to be updated to use the correct current date. The following message will be provided in the bounce message:

All old and new messages ID showing only similar date "Date: Wed, 01 May 2024 11:33:46 +0000" Might be issue with your script not upated with latest date.

<snip>

Could you please check with phpBB3 support
  1. Is an update to the latest version phpBB likely to resolve this?
    blank
  2. Is something like this most likely an issue with phpBB, or the mail server? Or something else?
