One of the requirements for phpBB 3.3.12 = * PHP 7.2.0+ up to and including PHP 8.3 with support for the database you intend to use.Should I be using a higher version of php for optimal use?
In short: PHP 7.3.33 is supported ... BUT ...
PHP 7.2 (and 7.3 and 7.4 and 8.0) are officially retired)
Even the 8.1 branch is in the stage where it receives security fixes only.
So using PHP >= 8.1 is recommended.
CPanel probably shows the default PHP version.Edit: my ACP states php 7.3.33 but my cPanel states v 8.2 is being used, now I am confused.
The ACP shows the actual PHP version being used for phpBB (that can probably be chosen by you ... a setting on your host control panel).
Take note that some older extensions may not be compatible with the more recent PHP versions.
Likewise more recent extensions may not be compatible with old PHP versions.
