You need to manage the traffic. First step you can take is looking at the who is online list, that heading is a link, check the user agents and if you see any guests with user agents for bots add them to the bot list. e.g. you will probably find claudebot as one the guests.
Go through your list of bots in phpbb's acp and ones identified by analytics, cpanel usually has awstats. identify ones you don't want indexing your site. Block them entirely with robots.txt, if a bot is identifying itself it will usually obey robots.txt
See where you are are after that, if you need to further reduce traffic consider Cloudflare.
